How To Change Boot Order In Computer BIOS

Changing the boot order in your computer’s BIOS is a straightforward process. Follow these steps to modify the boot order:

Step 1: Restart or turn on your computer. Look for a message during the Power On Self Test (POST) that prompts you to press a specific key, typically Del or F2, to access the BIOS setup utility. Press the indicated key as soon as you see the message.

Step 2: Launch the BIOS Configuration Utility. Once you enter the BIOS setup utility, use the appropriate keyboard command to proceed. The appearance of the BIOS utility may vary, but it typically consists of menus offering hardware options.

Step 3: Navigate to the BIOS boot order options. Locate and access the boot order options in your BIOS setup utility. This menu will list all connected bootable devices such as hard drives, floppy drives, USB ports, and optical drives. The order in which these devices are listed determines the boot sequence.

Step 4: Change the boot order. Use the instructions provided by your BIOS utility to modify the boot order. This typically involves using the + and – keys or other designated keys to rearrange the devices. You can set the device you want to boot from as the first option in the boot order.

Step 5: Save your BIOS modifications. After making the necessary changes to the boot order, navigate to the Exit or Save and Exit menu in your BIOS utility. Follow the instructions provided to save your settings. Confirm the modifications and exit the BIOS.

Step 6: Verify your changes. Your modified boot order will now take effect. Restart your computer, and it will attempt to boot from the first device in the new boot sequence. If that device is not bootable, it will proceed to the next device in the order.

It’s important to note that BIOS settings can vary between computer manufacturers, so the exact steps and menu names may differ. Always save your changes before exiting the BIOS utility. If you’re uncertain about modifying a setting, it’s best to consult the BIOS handbook or leave it at the default value.

Remember, this guide applies to PCs, laptops, desktops, and tablets running Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, or Windows 7 and is compatible with major computer manufacturers such as Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, and Samsung.
