Error correction allows a QR code to be scanned even if it is partially damaged or obscured. Level L = 7% recovery, M = 15%, Q = 25%, H = 30%. For QR codes that might be printed on surfaces that could get damaged, use H (maximum). For clean digital use (website, email), L or M is fine and produces a simpler, cleaner QR code.
PNG is a pixel-based format — great for use on websites, social media, and documents. It has a fixed resolution. SVG is a vector format — it can be scaled to any size (from business card to billboard) without losing quality. Use SVG if you plan to print the QR code large. Use PNG for digital sharing.

They encode information directly into the pattern itself, so they work as long as the destination (URL, phone number, etc.) remains valid. If you create a QR code for a website URL, it will work forever as long as that website is online.
Yes! Colored QR codes scan perfectly fine as long as there is sufficient contrast between the foreground (dark) and background (light) colors. Avoid light-on-light or dark-on-dark combinations.
